Once the modest fishing village of Edo, modern Tokyo is a sprawling metropolis of extraordinary neighborhoods that is the sum of its seemingly endless parts. Taste the culinary delights of Nihombashi before experiencing tomorrow’s electronic gadgets and manga culture in the Akihabara district. Browse the pottery shops of Asakusa before spending a day in the shopping mecca of Nihombashi. Take time to see the treasures of the Tokyo National Museum or visit the glorious Imperial Palace and Senso-ji temple in the ancient district of Asakusa. And, of course, snap a selfie in Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo’s Times Square.
Shimizu is a scenic city set on Suruga Bay, watched over by Mt. Fuji. It has long been a thriving harbor town and prospered during the Edo period. Today, its economy stands upon a vast fishing industry and on the export of green tea, whose leaves are cultivated in nearby hills. Beyond the city limits, wide plains reach coastal hills to the original burial place of the nation’s first shogun. This Shinto shrine, Kunozan Tosho-gu, is Japan’s oldest. With its flamboyant design, it is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the leader who unified Japan after years of civil war.
Kobe is home to Himeji Castle (Himeji-Jo), renowned as Japan’s most beautiful historic citadel. Also known as White Heron Castle, the UNESCO-listed hilltop structure was built in 1580 and features a five-story central tower with surrounding moats. After, indulge with a wonderful dinner experience of Kobe beef where everything is exquisitely prepared and served. Kobe’s Nada district is also Japan’s top sake-producing region, where you can learn the history of sake and visit some of the breweries that have been producing this unique liquor for over 250 years.
Today, while we are docked in Kobe, you’ll have the chance to visit the breathtaking temples and shrines of Kyoto, Japan’s old imperial capital and the cradle of Japanese culture. Spectacular sights include such UNESCO World Heritage Sites as the Kinkaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera and Byodo-in temples. Later, take a tour of the traditional Gion Geisha District where you can witness the ancient geisha tea ceremony for yourself. Finish your day exploring the famed Nijo Castle, built in 1603 as the residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period, or the Golden Pavilion, a Zen temple whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf.
Today you’ll have the choice of touring Osaka’s ancient shrines and Imperial history or venture to fascinating Kyoto. Osaka is located at the mouth of the Yodo River and is second only to Tokyo in size and cultural landmarks, the best known being Osaka Castle. For centuries, Osaka prospered because of its mercantile economy. The city is home to some of Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines. Its Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine is the flagship of 2,000 others spread throughout Japan. Each honors the guardian deity of sailors and the deity of prosperity, but the one here is considered the most majestic.
Today we’ll visit the hidden gem of Kochi, home to historical sites such as Kochi Castle, old sake breweries and traditional Japanese markets. Dating back to the early 18th century, Kochi Castle is one of the few castles in Japan to have maintained its original wooden structure. For a true taste of Kochi, have something to eat and drink at the Hirome Market. There are dozens of stalls to choose from, all serving a variety of cuisine, including delicious local Kochi dishes.
Despite being devastated in 1945, Hiroshima is known to all for its commitment to peace. Its destruction in 1945 led to the end of WWII and today, the Peace Memorial (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), is a constant reminder of the destruction that war brings. Visiting Hiroshima is a moving experience. While firmly focused on the future, Hiroshima doesn’t forget its past, and a visit to the Genbaku Dome is a must. You’ll enjoy the city’s modern, cosmopolitan atmosphere just as much as the peaceful stillness of its natural parkland areas such as splendid Shukkei-en, the town’s historic garden.
Today we’ll visit Busan, the second-largest city in South Korea. You’ll have the day to stroll around the lively streets and explore the city’s outstanding cultural heritage of art galleries, museums, and Buddhist sites. Best known is the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, first built in 1376 along the waterfront. The Gamcheon Culture Village showcases an entire community of homes with colorful roofs that seem to touch the sky. Finally, consider visiting the majestic Mahasa Temple, first built during the Silla Dynasty, making it one of the first temples in Busan.
Nagasaki is a vibrant port city full of color and international flair. More a bustling town than a packed metropolis, the city of Nagasaki is full of things to do. Curling around the western point of Kyushu, its proximity to mainland Asia made it a place open for trade during Japan's long period of isolation. This vibrant port city of sloping hills is renowned for its color, charm, and international influence. A strong Chinese influence in Nagasaki is visible through Chinatown, with its Confucian temples and local restaurants.
From the beaches of Amami-Oshima Island and ancient forests of Yakushima to the great volcanoes of Sakurajima and Kirishima, Kagoshima shows off Japan’s wild side. At the southern tip of mainland Japan, Kagoshima is nicknamed the “Naples of the East” for its bay and comfortable climate. The area is incredibly active geologically and is home to the great volcanoes of Mt. Kirishima and Mt. Sakurajima. A beneficial side effect of these volcanoes is a number of fantastic hot spring spas, ranging from traditional baths to beachside sand treatments in the shadow of Kagoshima's grand volcanoes.
Spend the day sailing in style aboard your boutique hotel at sea as we cruise the coast of Japan back to Tokyo. We end our cruise where we started... the energetic city of Tokyo. Tokyo is a city full of neon splendor and tranquil Shinto shrines, towering skyscrapers and meditative Zen gardens. Founded as the fishing village of Edo, Tokyo’s history was shaped by emperors and shoguns. As the Edo period progressed, it grew into one of the world’s largest cities, as it remains today. Tokyoites embrace the traditional and the cosmopolitan, both worshipping at the Asakusa Kannon Temple and frequenting the high-end retail stores of the Ginza district, all while the distant symmetrical cone of Mt. Fuji watches over the city.

The Cabaret Lounge onboard the Azamara Pursuit is where our OUTbound entertainers shine on stage! The main theater features amazing performers in an intimate, engaging atmosphere. The Cabaret Lounge is where we’ll have all of our OUTbound family moments, from staff introductions to final goodbyes. Located mid-ship on Deck 5, The Den is the perfect spot to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail while listening to the sounds of a classical grand pianist. The Den features a flat-screen TV and full bar, making it the ideal place to unwind with friends, watch special events or simply sit around the tall tables and exchange stories with your fellow OUTbounders. Enjoy a glass of wine or a mixed drink while the talented pianist entertains you with soothing background music. The Den is also the place to get inspired with travel tools that transport you to all corners of the world with travel books, guides, and destination-focused activities.
The Living Room, located forward on Deck 10, is a fantastic space for grabbing a drink with friends and enjoying panoramic views of the Sea of Japan and the gorgeous Japanese coastlines. Late night is when our featured DJs spin the latest dance tracks along with your classic favorites. The Living Room is also the place where our guests take their turn on stage during karaoke nights. And OUTbound theme nights let you channel your inner dancing queen and be free to be you!
This library is one of the quiet jewels of our ship, a peaceful and beautifully appointed space for reading or relaxing after dinner. Browse the collection or simply relax in the tranquil atmosphere. But the library goes beyond just paper, with interactive digital tabletops available where you can make your own postcards and post to social media to share your OUTbound adventures with your friends back home. The library is also home to the impressive Inspiration Center, a digital way to explore the world with OUTbound and gain inspiration for your next voyage.
The Mosaic Café is the coffee bar at the heart of Deck 5 serving cakes and light snacks. With the couple of small shops in this area, it has a vibrant village square vibe and is a great place to meet friends for a coffee and watch the world go by. The onboard coffee corner may very well become your favorite spot on the entire ship. It’s also one of the most stylish places, too. You’ll find all your favorite coffee drinks here, and of course everything is made to order just the way you like. Whether you’re looking for your favorite iced latte, a La Rica or Lavazza Decaf specialty coffee or exotic herbal tea, Mosaic Café is the place.
Located just outside the main restaurant, this busy bar is a favorite gathering place for pre- and post-dinner drinks and conversation. Meet up with your fellow OUTbounders for a drink to talk about the day’s adventures before sitting down to dinner. Bar service includes a full selection of fine wines, mixed drinks, and premium spirits… plus the entertaining banter of our friendly bartenders. The Discoveries Lounge is the place to come to be social and connect with old friends and new.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more extensive collection of limited production, small label and rare vintage wines anywhere on the high seas. And with vintages from France to California, and Argentina to South Africa, you’re sure to find a wine to suit your palate and your OUTbound journey. The knowledgeable sommeliers can help you select the perfect wines for your evening meal, and be sure to join the Wine Corner gatherings... perfect for discovering and enjoying new wines and benefiting from the thoughtful guidance of a knowledgeable sommelier.
In the main restaurant, you’ll discover the world through dishes and flavors from the places we visit. Of course, you'll also have a wide variety of nightly selections such as filet mignon with black truffle sauce. With its elegant yet lively dining and décor, it’s easy to see why this restaurant is the culinary heart of our ship and a hands-down favorite. Choose to have a romantic night at a table for two, or ask to be seated as part of a larger group of fellow OUTbounders... which we highly recommend!
At Aqualina, you’ll find some of Italy’s most authentic dishes. Pastas made from scratch, traditional and authentic recipes, and scrumptious vegetarian dishes that make sure there’s something for everyone. Savor a traditional Spaghetti Bolognese, enjoy an Eggplant Parmesan or a hearty Rigatoni Pomodoro with fresh veggies. But save room. You won’t be able to say no to famous desserts like sorrento lemon liqueur mousse and hazelnut chocolate soufflé. The chefs love to be inspired, so after an on-shore visit to a local market, you can expect a delectable dish so authentic, you’ll feel like you’re still in town. Aqualina is a specialty restaurant onboard and can be enjoyed for $50 per person, per meal.
When it comes to steaks, cooked to perfection, Prime C is the place to be. You’ll also have your choice of crab and lobster cakes with fennel-aioli, herb-coated rack of lamb, duck confit and Chilean sea bass... all paired with savory sides. And last, but certainly not least, sample Azamara’s famous mini cinnamon-sugar donuts with dipping sauces for dessert. But at Prime C, you’re in for more than delectable dining. Expect a great evening with stunning views and lush décor. And of course, the company can’t be beat. Prime C is a specialty restaurant onboard and can be enjoyed for $50 per person, per meal.
Windows Café offers quick and casual dining, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Take in the fresh breeze at an outdoor table and relax in the easy atmosphere or enjoy your meal inside at any of the flexible seating options. Have your omelette made-to-order, try a selection of meats carved right off the bone or create the perfect salad just the way you like it. The delicious selections change daily. Choose from fresh sushi, stir-fry and pasta, salads, smoked lox and other cold fish, a carving station and of course, desserts. Windows Café is also the place to pick up a quick snack or piece of fruit when you get a craving during the day.
Adjacent to the Windows Café, the Sunset Veranda is a welcoming outdoor patio with covered and open-air seating. It's the perfect place for dining alfresco, enjoying a refreshing drink, taking in the sights of your favorite port, or simply watching the world sail by. For our OUTbounders looking to dine while watching the sunset, the Sunset Veranda is right out the back door, with a stylish look and stunning views.
The Patio is many things... casual “pool grill” by day, then fine tablecloths and flickering candles set the mood for a sit-down al fresco dining experience by night. Taste your way around the Sea of Japan with exclusive personalized dishes using local flavors of the cities and towns we’ll visit on our cruise... served by our professional wait staff. And for a little touch of whimsy, treat yourself to a self-serve frozen yogurt from the self-serve station, Swirl & Top. With a variety of flavors and your choice of toppings, it’s the perfect way to cool off during the day or end your evening meal.

Choose from an extensive menu of services including state of the art skin care and restorative facials. Flight Ideas
Since our Temples and Traditions of Japan Cruise leaves from and returns to Tokyo, flights are super easy. Simply log onto your favorite airline’s website and look for roundtrip tickets to either of Tokyo’s major international airports. As one of the world’s most populous cities, Tokyo has two major airports: Narita International Airport (NRT) and Haneda Airport (HND).
Which Tokyo Airport is best for you?
Haneda Airport (HND)
Pros:
• Closer to Tokyo: Haneda is significantly closer to the city center.
• Better Amenities: Haneda is often praised for its modern facilities and amenities.
• Easier Immigration: Some travelers have reported smoother immigration processes at Haneda.
Cons:
• Potentially More Expensive: Flights to Haneda can be more expensive compared to Narita.
• Occasional Crowds: Like any major airport, Haneda can get crowded, especially during peak travel times.
Narita Airport (NRT)
Pros:
• Cheaper Flights: Narita often offers cheaper flight options.
• Good Transit Connections: Despite being further from Tokyo, Narita has excellent transit options, such as the Narita Express.
• More International Flights: Narita generally has more international flights.
Cons:
• Further from Tokyo: Narita is about an hour away from central Tokyo, our host hotel and the Toyko International Cruise Terminal.
• Longer Immigration: Some travelers have reported longer wait times at immigration.
Conclusion
For Convenience and Comfort: If you prioritize convenience and comfort, especially if you’re staying with us at our host hotel in Tokyo, Haneda is the better choice.
For Budget Travelers: If you’re on a budget, Narita can be a more affordable option, and the public transit options to our hotel or our ship from the airport are quite efficient.
The airline you choose is completely up to you. While flights are not included, we’re always happy to help narrow down the best flight options with you. Simply give us a call or send us an email, letting us know where you’ll be flying from, if you have a preferred airline (based on frequent flyer miles or credit card points), and what class of service you typically like to book.
Getting to the Ship
Our ship will be docked at the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal.
The exact address of the Tokyo Cruise Terminal is 2-chome Aomi Chisaki, Koto-ku, Tokyo 135-0064.
The Tokyo Cruise Terminal complex is fairly large, with over twenty different dock locations for cruise ships, passenger ferries and cargo ships. As we get a little closer to our sail date, our ship, the Azamara Pursuit, will be assigned a specific dock. We’ll update this section with the most current dock location once that has been assigned.
Boarding
Boarding officially begins at 2:00pm local time on Monday, April 12, 2027, but you are free to arrive at our ship at any time after 12:00pm, drop your luggage with one of the many porters, head through a quick security checkpoint, and then relax with some light refreshments in the dock facility until pre-boarding begins. Once pre-boarding opens, you’ll be able to register at one of the many gate agent counters, board the ship and participate in a quick muster station and security information session, and then begin exploring the gorgeous Azamara Pursuit.
The Windows Café on Deck 9 will be open to grab a bite and start getting to know your fellow OUTbounders!

For those of you who are getting an early start and arriving early in Tokyo, we will have you covered. We’ve partnered with the Hyatt Regency Tokyo to provide hotel packages for everyone looking to arrive in Tokyo a few days early, kick your jet lag, see a little of this amazing city, and start getting to know your fellow OUTbounders before you even step onboard our ship.

On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can start exploring with our OUTbound optional tours of Tokyo. OUTbound has partnered with a local LGBTQ+ tour agency to design a different kind of Tokyo holiday for our community, offering a uniquely rainbow experience in Japan’s capital city. Thanks to our LGBTQ+ tour experts and their knowledge, our OUTbounders will get a personal, up close tour of some of Tokyo’s best-known sights. Take A Picture!
Before heading out on a big trip, most travelers focus on packing the right clothes, confirming reservations, and making sure your passports are in hand. But seasoned OUTbounders know there’s another small step that can make a big difference in a pinch… snapping a few key photos before you leave home.
These quick snapshots take less than two minutes to capture but can save hours of stress if luggage gets lost, travel apps glitch, or important documents go missing.
Passport
A clear photo of the main passport page can make it faster to get a replacement at an embassy or consulate if your passport is lost. It’s best to keep this image in a secure, password-protected file or cloud app.
Prescription Medications & Labels
OUTbounders who take medication should take a picture of both your pills and the prescription labels. If your medications get lost or you run out, having the generic drug name on hand can make it much easier to refill while traveling.
Boarding Pass & Travel Documents
Travel apps sometimes glitch, and wifi isn’t always reliable at the airport. A screenshot of your boarding pass ensures it’s available offline when needed. The same goes for any hotel confirmations, train tickets, or tour reservations booked outside of your OUTbound trip.
Luggage Contents
Snapping a photo of everything packed in your suitcase before zipping it shut can be invaluable if your bags are delayed or lost. Airlines and insurance companies often ask for detailed lists of contents when processing a claim. A quick image can serve as proof of what was inside your bags and speed up any claims you might need to make.
As we all know, travel can be unpredictable, but your smartphone camera (something that’s already in your pocket and doesn’t require any extra cost) offers one of the easiest safeguards. Taking a few extra photos before you depart is a small habit that can prevent big headaches… and help you stay calm when plans don’t go exactly as expected.
Tipping Our Hosts
Tips for our onboard ship staff are included with your OUTbound vacation to Japan and South Korea.
Tips for our tour guides in Tokyo or for any of the shore excursions from our ship during the cruise are not included and are optional. At the end of each day’s guided tour, you’ll have the chance to tip our guide and driver whatever you feel your experience was worth.
If you feel that any individual in particular, either onboard our ship or during one of your tours, has gone above and beyond in making your experience something extra special, we encourage you to reach out to them directly and let them know how much you appreciated their service during our time together.
What Money Should You Bring?
Japan
The Japanese Yen is the official currency of Japan (abbreviated ¥). That means you will be able to use yen in Tokyo and every other city we visit in Japan during our cruise.
South Korea
The South Korean Won (abbreviated ₩) is the official currency of South Korea. You’ll use won during our visit to Busan.
You can also use your credit or debit card as well throughout our trip, as credit cards are widely accepted everywhere in both of the countries we will visit. However, remember that there will be additional bank charges upon usage and even a foreign transaction fee in some cases, depending on your bank.
Will I need a Visa to enter Japan or South Korea?
Japan
No! Currently, tourists with passports issued by the United States, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom or Australia do not need visas for short-term visits (up to three months).
Travelers from other countries who are unsure of their eligibility to travel to Japan should contact the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate for additional information.
US Citizens do not need a Visa to enter Japan.
Japan Entry Requirements
- An undamaged passport valid for at least six months from the date you exit Japan
- One blank passport page for an entry stamp
- A return or onward ticket from Japan
Japan Arrival Card
The Japan Arrival Card is a mandatory entry form for all travelers arriving in Japan, regardless of your citizenship. Visitors can submit their details digitally through Visit Japan Web, which integrates immigration, customs, and quarantine information into one streamlined platform.

Be sure to complete your form prior to your arrival in Tokyo to avoid any delays when clearing immigration and customs!
Take a picture or screen shot of your completed QR code prior to arriving in Japan. Wifi service can be spotty in the airport arrivals terminal, so having a picture of your entry QR code will help speed up your entry process.
South Korea
All OUTbounders from the United States, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom or Australia cruising with us to South Korea will be part of a ‘blanket visa’ and will not need to apply for a special individual entry visa for South Korea.
What Power Converters Will I Need?
Our ship, the Azamara Pursuit, has two (2) EU 220v Type C outlets and two (2) US 110v Standard outlets in each stateroom. Feel free to bring a USB adapter with multiple outlets so that you can charge several of your devices at once.
If you are joining us early in Tokyo, our host hotel uses power outlets Type A and Type B, like in the United States. You will need an adapter for power outlets Type A for any items that use three-prong plugs…
Travel Insurance
If we’ve learned anything over these last couple of years, it’s that the world can be an uncertain place at times. While you’re never required to buy travel insurance, it’s a good idea and we recommend all OUTbounders consider protecting your hard-earned vacation money. The price of your coverage will depend on a few factors, including the cost of the trip, what state you live in, how long before the trip departs, and if you have any pre-existing or underlying health conditions, to name a few.
