Bonjour, and welcome aboard! You are welcome to board our ship and get settled into your staterooms. You’ll have the afternoon free to set out and discover the Christmas market in Strasbourg or enjoy a relaxing afternoon onboard meeting your hosts and fellow OUTbounders. Tonight we’ll introduce our crew at a welcome cocktail before dinner. After dinner we’ll meet up in the lounge and enjoy a festive night of Christmas entertainment to get us in the holiday spirit as we set sail for Germany.

Heidelberg, Germany

Featuring one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany, Heidelberg is a must for those seeking a festive atmosphere while searching for the perfect mug of original ‘Christmas Mulled Wine’. Of course nothing goes better with a cup of steaming gülhwein than a piece of Lebkuchen (German Christmas gingerbread) or slice of Stollen (German Christmas cake). The market in Old Town is also worth a visit, where legend has it that the famed Heinzelmännchen gnomes ensure that no modern or mass-produced goods are sold. If you’re looking for hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind treasures, Heidelberg is the place for you!

Speyer, Germany

Speyer comes to life with the twinkling of lights, market stalls and general merriment of this charming German city. There’s something undeniably magical about the setting of Speyer’s main Christmas market within the medieval walls of the city’s Old Towne. Enter the market through the Old Gate (Altpoertel), the medieval west city gate of Speyer, one of the largest and most architecturally significant city gates in Germany. We’ll stay in Speyer overnight, so you’ll have time to stroll down Speyer’s Main Street for a look at even more festive shops and stalls, with Speyer Cathedral looming large in the distance as the perfect backdrop.

Basel, Switzerland

Today we arrive in Basel for a uniquely Swiss take on the traditional European Christmas market. Basel has a deep-rooted tradition as Switzerland’s most beautiful Christmas city. Not only is Old Town radiant in the warm Christmas light, but the shops and facades of its buildings glitter with a golden glow. Around a hundred tall pine trees line the streets and stand like brightly lit sentinels guiding visitors. We’ll remain docked overnight, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore both of the city’s largest markets, the first held on Barfüsserplatz, and the other on Münsterplatz, two of the most beautiful squares in Basel.

Strasbourg & Colmar, France

This morning you’ll get to choose your own adventure as we offer you the choice between two fantastic French Christmas experiences. We’ll set out on a discovery tour of the Christmas markets in Colmar, beautifully decorated for the holiday season. This afternoon we’ll tour old Strasbourg and its Christmas markets, with plenty of free time to explore on your own before we set out to discover the illuminations in the city. The whole town is decorated with garlands and Christmas decorations, creating a magical atmosphere. We’ll spend the night on board before disembarking in the morning.

Strasbourg, France

Meet us in Strasbourg as we take in all that the holidays have to offer. The waft of delicious mulled wine and roasting chestnuts, along with a backdrop of festive sounds and twinkling lights ensure the air is filled with delightful Christmas-time cheer. Remaining true to their roots, many merchants at these wonderfully festive markets are local trades-people selling hand-crafted gifts and decorations, along with a delicious array of seasonal food to tempt you. Enticing smells of sizzling bratwurst, toasted candied almonds and Christmas cookies known as Lebkuchen fill the air and are impossible to resist.

Heidelberg, Germany

This morning we cruise along the Rhine River and arrive in Heidelberg, situated in a region known for its thick forests, ravines, lakes, cuckoo clocks and traditional costumes. Our guided tour of the city’s rich history includes a visit to the ruins of Heidelberg Castle, overlooking the Rhine River and a red-roofed skyline. Afterwards, stroll down the cobbled streets of the old town, stopping at the Church of the Holy Spirit and the oldest university in Germany. We’re here for a full day, so enjoy this ancient city that looks as though it has been pulled from the pages of a German fairytale at your leisure.

Speyer, Germany

Visit Speyer’s atmospheric Christmas market in the heart of the picturesque old town. The Speyer market entices with some unique regional specialties, such as potato soup and yeast dumplings. You’ll also find delicate wooden ornaments, glass figurine wind chimes, colorful paper lanterns and handcrafted tin cookie cutters. For those looking for something other than a Christmas market, don’t miss a visit to the Speyer Cathedral or the Technik Museum of Transportation, home to a WWII German U-boat submarine, a full-size 747 jumbo jet suspended 100 feet up in the air and the only surviving Soviet Space Shuttle.

Basel, Switzerland

The Basel Christmas market at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz is considered to be the prettiest and largest in Switzerland. During the run-up to Christmas, many events and spectacular special exhibitions in the city’s museums further enrich its cultural scene. Basel has a very special Swiss charm at Christmas, reflected in the festively decorated Old Town. A magnificent Christmas tree stands on the Münsterplatz, the perfect backdrop for a fun fondue dinner with friends. The Christmas market has around 160 stalls offering regional delicacies, handmade toys and of course, deliciously authentic swiss chocolates.

Colmar, France

The magic of Christmas in Colmar starts in Old Town, illuminated and decorated like a fairy tale. Situated right in the heart of the historic town center, Colmar’s six Christmas markets radiate warmth and an inviting atmosphere where you are sure to make some delightful discoveries. Each with its own particular theme, the markets will envelop you in the magic of Christmas, a unique atmosphere guaranteed to delight young and old alike. Colmar’s decorations and lights will sweep you up in the magic of the Christmas season.

Strasbourg, France

Spend today in Strasbourg, the Capital of Christmas. From the magnificent Cathedral to the city’s most beautiful squares, Strasbourg invites you to share in the most marvelous of all the holidays. The Strasbourg Christmas market has been part of the city since the Middle Ages, making it the oldest Christmas market in France and one of the oldest in Europe. With four separate markets, each with its own theme, Strasbourg’s Christmas markets really have something for everyone. Get a picture under the 100-foot-tall Christmas tree, shop at the steps of Strasbourg Cathedral, or discover locally made treasures.
