Willkommen to Germany! Today we’ll start our cruise in Passau, a city steeped in history, tradition and culture. After comfortably settling into your cabins, take some time to explore this fantastic city on your own, or just unwind with a cocktail and get to know your follow OUTbounders up in the lounge. Later in the evening we’ll introduce our crew at a welcome cocktail before sitting down for dinner. Later tonight we’ll begin our river cruise and set sail through Germany and the very best of the Christmas markets!
Today, we’ll visit Regensburg, a city that miraculously survived WWII with all of its old-world charm intact. This UNESCO World Heritage city is transformed during the holiday season as its medieval streets are donned with festive cheer. Narrow passageways open to hidden courtyards with stalls laden with handcrafted treasures that seem to go on forever. Do a little holiday shopping as you enjoy the scent of home-baked spiced gingerbread, cinnamon and glühwein filling the air.
Today we’ll visit Nuremberg, a city steeped in history, tradition and culture. Nuremberg is filled with traditional half-timbered houses and Gothic churches with intricate spires. Although nearly destroyed during World War II, the remaining medieval city walls stretch some three miles and feature original gateways and original watchtowers. Nuremberg is well known historically for its metal and toy craftsmanship, the perfect stop to do a little Christmas shopping for some authentic souvenirs!
Founded in 902, Bamberg remains a medieval-looking city known for its symphony orchestra and ‘rauchbier’, a specialty smoked beer unique to the city. The winding streets are filled with baroque patrician houses and are home to the stunning Cathedral of the Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich II. Bamberg is especially noted for its Altes Rathaus, or Old Town Hall, situated on a twin-arched bridge over the Regnitz River, and for the 16th-Century Alte Hofhaltung (Old Court).
Würzburg is a mix of history, culture and wine. This university city is ideally situated on either side of the Main River and offers a vibrant atmosphere and an endearing charm. Würzburg is a Baroque city offering southern German flair and Franconian hospitality. Don’t miss Würzburg’s most famous landmarks... the Würzburg Residence with its Court Gardens, Residence Square and the Old Main Bridge, lined with impressive statues of saints throughout the ages.
Rüdesheim am Rhein is one of the most beautiful wine regions in Germany. Strolling among the half-timbered buildings of the old town, you’ll see countless castles and vineyards along the Rhine River. At the heart of the old town in Drosselgasse, a cobbled street lined with timber-framed buildings. It might be old world in architecture, but here you’ll find some of the best entertainment venues in the city, from live music in taverns to restaurants serving regional dishes. Don’t miss the chance to sip a local riesling and pinot noir in Medieval settings.
Today we visit Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers converge. French and German traditions have produced a truly unique cultural fusion in Koblenz, characterized by cozy wine taverns, narrow alleyways, romantic spots and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere that you’ll get to experience for yourself. Things to see include the Guard House, which dates back to 1689, and the Schängel fountain, which stands in the courtyard of the Town Hall and is one of the city’s main landmarks.
Today we’re in Cologne... a city known for its kölsch beer and, of course, the cathedral. The UNESCO World Heritage Site and world-class religious landmark is the hub of this modern metropolis on the Rhine. Cologne’s Cathedral is a landmark of High Gothic architecture set amid the reconstructed old town. The twin-spired Cologne Cathedral is also known for its gilded medieval reliquary and sweeping river views. The adjacent Museum Ludwig showcases 20th-century art, including many masterpieces by Picasso, and the Romano-Germanic Museum houses Roman antiquities.
This morning we say “tot ziens” to the city of Amsterdam and our epic German Christmas Markets River Cruise. Spend your final hours exploring more of the city’s elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the Amsterdam’s 17th-century Golden Age. Take one last stroll through Dam Square in the heart of city, or head over to the Museum District which houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk. However you choose to spend your time in Amsterdam, know that it will always be memorable!

Welcome to Germany! Today we’ll start our holiday river cruise. Upon arriving in Munich, you’ll be met at the airport for your transfer to our ship in Passau. We’re docked for the afternoon, so feel free to explore the city and take in all the Christmas lights on your own while shopping the countless craft stalls before returning back onboard to start our OUTbound holiday cruise! After boarding our ship and settling in, you’ll meet our crew and your OUTbound family before having dinner.
Today you’ll discover Regensburg, one of Germany’s hidden gems with a magnificent walking tour. Immerse yourself in Regensburg’s festive atmosphere as you admire the city’s twinkling lights and visit historical sights including the medieval stone bridge, the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) and the Gothic-style St. Peter’s Cathedral. Delight in the charm of the Christmas market in front of the cathedral and enjoy the atmosphere before heading back to our ship at your leisure.
Tour one of Germany’s most renowned and intriguing cities today. We’ll visit the Old Town, where you can delve into Nuremberg’s complex past. This medieval city is still surrounded by 14th-Century walls, with many gates and watchtowers fully intact. It grew into a toy-making capital of Europe, where craftsmen shaped metal for the joy of children. Stroll past half-timbered houses and browse the stalls at the Market Square, one of Europe’s most celebrated.
Delve into the history of Bamberg during a walk to view historic sights. Head to the medieval city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passing by the magnificent 11th-Century cathedral with its four imposing towers. The church was rebuilt in the late Romanesque and early Gothic style during the 13th -Century. After, visit the picturesque Rathaus, or town hall, built in the middle of a double-arched bridge over the Regnitz River. Be sure to try some of the town’s distinctive rauchbier, or smoke-flavored beer.
This morning we’ll take a guided tour of Würzburg, historic residence of the German Prince-Bishops. We’ll start with a visit to the Würzburg Residence (or Residenz), former palace of the Prince-Bishops where you’ll discover 40 rooms richly decorated with furniture, paintings and tapestries by 18th century master artists and climb the monumental Main Staircase designed by Balthasar Neumann. Our tour will continue to the historic city center of Würzburg where you will have some free time before returning to our ship by coach.
Today we’ll have a guided tour of Rüdesheim am Rhein, one of the most beautiful wine regions in Germany. On our tour we’ll stroll among the half-timbered buildings of the old town and Drosselgasse, see castles and vineyards, and sip local riesling and pinot noir in a Medieval setting. Along the way we’ll take a ride on a open air train, taste a few of the famous wines of this rich region and have a guided visit of the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments, a museum started by German collector in an old manor house, the Brömserhoflater.
After an afternoon sailing along the Rhine, we’ll arrive in Koblenz, one of Germany’s oldest and most beautiful towns. Visit the famous Deutsches Eck, or German Corner, where the Rhine and Moselle Rivers converge. Even in December, we’ll see vineyards, forests and the four mountain ranges that form the unique backdrop to this 2,000-year-old city. Save time to visit one of the town’s many Christmas markets for some unique German gifts to bring back home.
Join us for a tour to Cologne’s most famous structure, the Cologne Cathedral. The cathedral, completed in 1880, survived World War II almost entirely intact. After, we’ll walk to Cologne’s Old Town to see its rustic narrow alleyways lined with traditional old houses. Enjoy a draft Kölsch beer or try Cologne’s typical Halver Hahn sandwich during your free time after our tour. Finally, browse one of Cologne’s many Christmas markets, the largest of which can be found surrounding the base of Cologne Cathedral.
This morning we arrive in Amsterdam and the end of our incredible Christmas cruise together. Start your journey home, or choose to spend a couple of days longer in Amsterdam exploring on your own. Your transfers to the airport or one of the city’s many fantastic hotels are included, so relax, enjoy your final morning onboard and start looking forward to our next OUTbound adventure together.

The tastefully decorated Horizon Lounge, located at the front of the ship, was named for the superb views of the passing coastlines that guests will enjoy courtesy of the oversized windows. Intimate seating areas are peppered throughout the open floor plan, allowing you the choice of going all in with the group or enjoying a little private time between you and a smaller gathering of friends. The lounge also has a self-service beverage station with a machine that dispenses espresso, capuccino, mochaccino, hot chocolate, and hot water for a selection of teas... an OUTbounder favorite!

Enjoy a cocktail at the Horizon bar with us while watching a spectacular sunset together. Located within the Horizon Lounge, you’ll find originality and innovation, with a new twist on the ol’ purveyors of gin and tonics and buckets of beer. This is the place where you’ll spend an enjoyable evening nursing a cocktail with great friends, old and new! Whether you’re in the mood for a mixed drink or glass of wine, we invite you to join us and enjoy one of best bars on the river with your fellow OUTbounders. Order your favorite festive holiday cocktail you’ll savor after a long day exploring the Christmas markets.

Your warm welcome onboard begins in the main reception area, the heart of our ship and main point of information while you are sailing. Here, your friendly crew will be happy to help you get the most from your time with us, whether before leaving for the day’s excursions or arranging for any special requests you may have. With tasteful and modern décor, the three-tiered atrium in the center of the reception area allows natural light to pour in and illuminate the interior.

Get set for a gastronomic adventure in Reflections Restaurant, your go-to dining area for sumptuous local dishes expertly prepared by skilled chefs. Spacious and contemporary, with flexible seating options, this is your space to discover the local tastes of the season. Located on the Vista Deck, the restaurant comfortably seats all our OUTbounders at tables which vary in size with a panoramic view. The atmosphere is casual but elegant. The selection and presentation of the food is outstanding, and you’ll find the quality of service is unmatched.

An idyllic spot for breakfast and light lunches, the Terrace Café is a unique indoor/outdoor dining area located just forward of the Horizon Lounge. With a commanding position at the very front of the ship, inspiring views are guaranteed. This open-air bow seating and eating area has electric doors that make it easy to carry a drink or meal outside for a unique snack experience... snacks that are available throughout the day near the ship’s lounge at the end of the bar.

If you stick to a daily fitness regime at home, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t keep it up on your holiday. The onboard gym has everything you need to work up a sweat on your travels, so you can justify one more delightful dish or extravagant cocktail. The gym has a workout bike, free weights and a treadmill. If the fitness center isn’t where you want to be, then take advantage of the ship’s track. The jogging track encircles the perimeter of the Sun Deck, so you can kill two birds with one stone... exercise and enjoy the view.

Your space for relaxation and rejuvenation, the onboard Wellness Area provides everything from facial treatments to massages, delivered by a trained beauty therapist. Downstairs on Riviera Deck is the hairdresser, where you can get haircuts, head and neck massages, and other services. Be sure to book quickly at the front desk when you embark because availability is limited.

Some nights, the pool at the back of our ship is converted into a cinema. The transformation happens when the pool floor rises to deck level. After the floor has been mopped dry, crew members set up chairs and lower a large movie screen. Popcorn is available, and you can order drinks from the bar or grab a specialty coffee or tea from the self-service machine.

The indoor pool is located aft on Horizon Deck. It’s surrounded by a glass-walled lounge area with chairs, tables, dressing rooms, and a bar with a self-service machine for coffee drinks and tea. The heated pool, complete with a retractable roof, is the perfect way to spend an afternoon or evening, soaking with friends while watching the incredible scenery of the Danube drift by.

The Sun Deck is much more than the place to savor a hot chocolate or specialty coffee. It’s also the perfect way to spend your afternoon enjoying a panoramic view of the magnificent rolling landscapes. The Sun Deck has a gorgeous outdoor living area and a huge canopy midship, perfect for OUTbounders who prefer a little cover as we sail along the Danube. Whether golf’s your game or you prefer a game of tic-tac-toe, lazy afternoons on the river are never boring with the games area and putting green.

Are You Ready for the Christmas Markets of Germany?
Let’s get started!
Flight Ideas
Since our trip begins in Passau and ends in Amsterdam, flights can be a little tricky.
The best option is to book a ‘multi-city’ city flight, that allows you to arrive in Munich (MUC), which is the largest airport near Passau, and depart from Amsterdam (AMS). The advantage to a multi-city reservation is that your flights are all under one reservation number. Typically you won’t see a huge price difference between booking a multi-city reservation rather than a round trip fare.
Your transfers from Munich to Passau on Wednesday, December 9th are included.
The drive from our ship in Munich to our ship in Passau will take approximately two hours, so OUTbound doesn’t recommend any flights arriving in Munich (MUC) after 11:00am on Wednesday, December 9th, 2026.
And of course the standard disclaimer, you are always welcome to book any flight or airline you wish and OUTbound does not guarantee or endorse any airline or flight.
Munich Host Hotel
For those of you joining us before our cruise in Munich, our host hotel is the Novotel Muenchen City Centre, located in the city center just a few minutes walk from Munich’s Old Towne.

By Taxi: Rates for taxis can often range from €35 to €40 (about $45 to $50 US dollars) depending on the time of day, and are readily available as you exit the Munich International Airport on the arrivals (ground) level. All cabs are required by law to accept credit cards.
By Rideshare: Uber and Bolt are both available in Munich. Uber fares from the Munich Airport to our host hotel will often run anywhere from €30 to €35 (about $40 to $45 US dollars), depending on the time of day and traffic.
Transfers from the Novotel Muenchen City Centre to our ship docked on the Danube River are included with the Munich Hotel Package.
Amsterdam Host Hotel

Upgrade Your Drink Package
As with every OUTbound trip, all of the standard beers, wines, mixed drinks, specialty coffees, sodas and bottled waters are included in the price of your trip. However, Emerald does offer an Enhanced Beverage Package for those of you looking for something special.
To download the full drink list, including what is included with your cruise and what the Enhanced Package offers, click… HERE.
The Enhanced Beverage Package can be added to your reservation for $105 per person, either before we sail or once you are onboard.
Take A Picture!
Before heading out on a big trip, most travelers focus on packing the right clothes, confirming reservations, and making sure your passports are in hand. But seasoned OUTbounders know there’s another small step that can make a big difference in a pinch… snapping a few key photos before you leave home.
These quick snapshots take less than two minutes to capture but can save hours of stress if luggage gets lost, travel apps glitch, or important documents go missing.
Passport
A clear photo of the main passport page can make it faster to get a replacement at an embassy or consulate if your passport is lost. It’s best to keep this image in a secure, password-protected file or cloud app.
Prescription Medications & Labels
OUTbounders who take medication should take a picture of both your pills and the prescription labels. If your medications get lost or you run out, having the generic drug name on hand can make it much easier to refill while traveling.
Boarding Pass & Travel Documents
Travel apps sometimes glitch, and wifi isn’t always reliable at the airport. A screenshot of your boarding pass ensures it’s available offline when needed. The same goes for any hotel confirmations, train tickets, or tour reservations booked outside of your OUTbound trip.
Luggage Contents
Snapping a photo of everything packed in your suitcase before zipping it shut can be invaluable if your bags are delayed or lost. Airlines and insurance companies often ask for detailed lists of contents when processing a claim. A quick image can serve as proof of what was inside your bags and speed up any claims you might need to make.
As we all know, travel can be unpredictable, but your smartphone camera (something that’s already in your pocket and doesn’t require any extra cost) offers one of the easiest safeguards. Taking a few extra photos before you depart is a small habit that can prevent big headaches… and help you stay calm when plans don’t go exactly as expected.
Tipping Our Hosts
Tipping is the ONLY thing not included with your OUTbound vacation. We never want to dictate anyone’s generosity or decide how much you think YOUR experience with a crew member, waitstaff or tour guide was worth. How much to tip depends on the type of service you receive and your personal experience.
During our trip together, you’ll come into contact with many different servers and hosts. At the end of each day’s guided tour, you’ll have the chance to tip our guide and driver whatever you feel your experience was worth.
Onboard our ship, you’ll receive an envelope in your stateroom on the last night of our cruise before disembarking the next morning in Amsterdam and heading home. It’s here where you will have the opportunity to leave a tip that will be split among the crew… waitstaff, bartenders, room stewards and the entertainment staff.
A general rule of thumb for tipping the ship’s staff is €10 per day, per person.
However, if your experience warrants something more, then by all means feel free to be as generous as you would like. If you feel that any individual in particular has gone above and beyond in making your experience something extra special, then we encourage you to reach out to them directly and let them know how much you appreciated their service during our time together.
What Money Should You Bring?
Germany & Netherlands
Both Germany and the Netherlands are members of the European Union and each are one of the countries that use the Euro (abbreviated €) as their national currency.
You can also use your credit or debit card as well throughout our trip, as credit cards are widely accepted everywhere in each of the countries we will visit. However, remember that there will be additional bank charges upon usage and even a foreign transaction fee in some cases, depending on your bank.
Will I need a Visa to enter Germany?
No! Americans who are planning to visit Europe with us this Christmas will not have to worry about applying for the European Union’s new travel authorization system.
US Citizens do not need a Visa to enter the EU.
For almost a decade now, European Union authorities have been working on a visa-like system called the European Travel Information and Authorization System. After several years of delays, the new system has now been pushed back until 2027 because its entry/exit database still isn’t ready.
That means US Citizens will not need a Visa this Christmas to join us!
For all of the latest ETIAS information, visit the official European Union Travel website HERE.
EU Entry and Exit System (EES)
As of October 12, 2025, US citizens will need to go through the EU’s new Entry and Exit System when traveling to 29 European countries. This applies to any visits lasting up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Your fingerprints, facial image, passport details, and entry and exit dates will be collected upon entry to an EES country and stored digitally. You do not need to pay a fee to enter the Schengen Area or the EU. The new system will be introduced gradually, and no advanced action is required.
There is no online application, advanced registration, or fee required for the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES). It is a biometric border control system that replaces traditional passport stamping. You will complete your EES registration in-person at a self-service kiosk or border desk the first time you enter a Schengen Area country.
Travel to Europe Mobile App (EES)
The Travel to Europe mobile application is now available, allowing pre-registration of travel information prior to arrival in Germany. The app allows non-EU travelers to pre-register their passport data for the Entry/Exit System (EES) before reaching a border crossing point.
Non-EU nationals can use the app to pre-register their data up to 72 hours prior to entering or leaving a European country.
The app is voluntary and does not replace border checks but makes border crossing more efficient. Use of the application is optional and free of charge, and it is available on the App Store and Google Play. You can get more information about the EES Mobile App by clicking HERE.
What Power Converters Will I Need?
Our ship, the Emerald Astra, has two (2) EU 220v Type C outlets and two (2) US 110v Standard outlets in each stateroom. Feel free to bring a USB adapter with multiple outlets so that you can charge several of your devices at once.
If you are joining us early in Munich, you’ll need a Type C adapter for use at our hotel as it has the same receptacles as standard EU power outlets.
The Type C is the plug which has two round pins, like this…
You can find a ton of options on Amazon or other retailers that will include USB ports for charging your phone, tablet and other devices all at the same time.
Keep in mind that the United Kingdom (UK) uses different power outlets than the EU, so the Type C adapter will not work if you are visiting England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland during your trip.
Travel Insurance
If we’ve learned anything over these last couple of years, it’s that the world can be an uncertain place at times. While you’re never required to buy travel insurance, it’s a good idea and we recommend all OUTbounders consider protecting your hard-earned vacation money. The price of your coverage will depend on a few factors, including the cost of the trip, what state you live in, how long before the trip departs, and if you have any pre-existing or underlying health conditions, to name a few.
Some reasons why you might buy travel insurance include:
- Cancel for Any Reason
- Unexpected Work Requirements
- Personal or Family Illness
OUTbound does not provide travel insurance. However, we always recommend using a third-party insurance carrier to provide your coverage.
